Located in the heart of Glasgow, our studio is situated in a beautiful, historic limestone building. The impressive corner property was originally built as a bank in the nineteenth century, and displays the unique architectural style of Victorian Glasgow.
Situated on the corner of Buchanan Street and St. Vincent Street, the studio is ideally located for both those living in Glasgow, and for those commuting in from farther afield. We are just a two minutes’ walk from the Buchanan St. Underground Station, and only a five minutes walk from Buchanan Bus Station and both Glasgow Queen Street and Glasgow Central railway stations.
Buchanan Street being one of the busiest high streets in Glasgow, our studio is surrounded by local amenities such as restaurants, cafes and art supply shops. Despite being located above a bustling high street, our studio rooms are quiet and tranquil.
North Light Studio
It is paramount in our philosophy that students learn to draw and paint using natural light. The gentle, harmonious variations of tone and colour that natural light provides are unparalleled, and they help attune the student’s eye to subtle temperature and value shifts within the subject.
Working in natural light also encourages flexibility and a deeper understanding of the principles of how light and colour work, as the student is compelled to synthesise the many changing light effects that result from changes in weather, time of day and time of year.
Our studio has the best type of natural lighting for learning classical drawing and painting techniques; exclusively north-facing windows illuminate both rooms of our academy. This means that no direct sunlight enters into the studio, as North lighting is the result of the reflection of the sun in the earth’s atmosphere. This indirect light coming in through a single window creates a beautiful and consistent light effect.
